Description

Taken directly overhead, this photo is not your typical Aurora Borealis but a related phenomena known as S.T.E.V.E. Discovered by two citizen scientists right here in Alberta, it was given the name Steve by one of the two photographers in homage to the hedge named by characters in the Dreamworks children's movie “Over the Hedge”. When NASA agreed this was something apart from the usual Aurora, they loved the story of the name and backronymed it to mean Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. Often he presents as a purple ribbon across the celestial dome, but this night he broke up in spots directly overhead, creating this little ballerina-like vision and one of my favourite shots.
